Treatment Of People With Dog Allergies

No treatment will erode the allergy from its roots or make it disappear. However, proper treatment and medication will surely help you get rid of symptoms that make you feel uncomfortable and make your life so unpleasant. The best thing to do is to consult a doctor, who after several tests and proper diagnosis can recommend the type of medication that will suit your system and help you get rid of an uncomfortable lifestyle.

Antihistamine syrup and tablets

Antihistamine blocks the release of histamine in the body and erases the symptoms caused by the release of the same. This is usually recommended to people, who suffer from mild hay-fever symptoms including running and blocked nose, itchy eyes, etc.

Eye Drops

There are eye drops available with antihistamine or sodium in it and these reduce the redness, itchiness and watering of the eyes.

Nasal spray

Nasal drops or nasal sprays contain antihistamine and other medications that help to reduce the irritation in the nose and nasal congestion.

Even after all the avoidance and cleanliness, nasal spray, eye drops and antihistamine, if the patient continues to suffer, the doctor prescribes other oral medications. They are the following:

Non-prescribed medication:
Decongestants such as Chlor-Trimeton and Sudafed
Nasal spray for instance nasalcrom
Short-acting antihistamines including Claritin and Benadryl

All of these may help in countering the symptoms and signs of low hay fever.

Prescribed medication:

Long-acting antihistamines such as clarinex and zyrtec
Leukotriene inhibitor montelukast that helps in blocking the release of histamine that causes the signs and symptoms
Nasal corticosteroid sprays that help in reducing the inflammation

Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy or allergy shots is also recommended and these help in desensitizing a person to dog’s dander. It is recommended when the above medications do not work. In this therapy, you will receive injections of allergens once or twice a week that will reduce the sensitivity towards the allergen. This will just help you to get medically immune, so that you do not suffer from frequent irrigational symptoms on encountering a dog. This therapy has to be continued for years, and is not as helpful as removing the dog from the environment.

Besides these, new therapies and treatments are being discovered for the relief of the symptoms and the allergy. One such experimental treatment is Enzyme-potentiated Desensitization (EPD). This has; however, been tested and tried for decades now. To much of our disappointment, this has not been found to be effective.
