Tips on How to Live With Your Dog If You Are Allergic to Them

Live with your best friend

A dog is believed to be a man’s best friend. It is so much fun to have one around. There is somebody you can go out for a walk, when nobody else is around; there is somebody who loves to catch the frisbee every time you flip it in the air; there is somebody who can bear you cribbing throughout the night and would never complain. Can you see a life without a hairy dog, who loves to bark to and wake you up in the morning and fetches your newspaper from the porch to save your time? No. Certainly not!

Dog allergy is common. But that does not mean you would not keep a dog or deprive your boy to keep one when he loves dogs! There is always a solution to the problem. Do the following if you would like to keep a dog or would want to see your baby boy smile:

Groom your dog- Ask a family member, who is not allergic to dogs, brush it every day outside the house, and wash it with soap and water every five days.

Creating pet-free zones- Establish rooms in your house where “dogs are not allowed.” For instance, your bedroom, your kitchen, etc, where you spend most of your time. This will not entirely free you from sneezing or feeling itchy because pet dander is carried through air as well, but you still have some checks.

Build a kennel outside your house- If you have a backyard or a front lawn; build a kennel for your dog. It may not be an appropriate shelter in seasons like monsoon and winter. Besides, in other seasons the pet dander can be carried by air or sticking on to the clothes. Nevertheless, it can be considered as a precautionary step.

Get rid of furniture that attracts dander- Carpets could be replaced by hardwood flooring or linoleum. Fabric furniture could be exchanged for leather or vinyl. Cloth drapes could be replaced with plastic blinds.

Use high- efficiency filters- High- efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters and vacuum bags may trap the allergens and reduce the amount of allergens stuck onto the furniture, respectively.

Ask for a favor- To keep your environment clean and dander free, as much as possible, as a family member, who is free from allergy, to clean the dog’s kennel every now and then.

Medication- Continue taking your medication and visit your doctor whenever you feel uncomfortable.

Hint: I use a warm saltwater bath once a week to keep my Staffy free of skin allergies. Any red rashes just goes away after a natural (and in-expensive) salt bath.

Life would not be as difficult and scratchy as you think it would be!
